Murder Mystery Evenings - General Guidance

Preparations for your Murder Mystery Evening

Each murder mystery pack will contain all you will need to organise a 'Murder Mystery' evening. A full timetable will be included as part of your chosen package.

1. Having decided on your venue, usually a school or church hall, depending on who you are fundraising for, you should get the actors together. You may wish to employ an extra member of the group, to act as director/organiser and to assist backstage on the evening of the performance.
2. The sets require a simple stage or even floor area.
3. Props and costumes: props and costumes should be gathered fairly early on and again should not prove too difficult.
4. Stage directions have, by and large, been deliberately omitted from the play; different groups will wish to adapt the plays to suit themselves.
5. The acting style: this varies according to the audience. In plays such as these, the performance is less of an attempt at 'true life' representation and more of a puzzle. You may decide to send up your chosen script. They work whether they are done totally straight or very much 'tongue in cheek'.
6. murder mystery scriptsYou will need to run through your chosen play approximately four times before you perform it, so you should find that two or three rehearsals will suffice. The play is written to be performed with the scripts in hand, so there is no pressure to learn the lines. You will find that the audience accepts this manner of presentation, provided you imbue your acting with a reasonable amount of energy and good humour!
